Ethics

Interpreters working in different fields have slightly different ethical rules to follow. In general, however, the following ethical guidelines apply:


  • Confidentiality - all information gained in the course of interpreting is strictly confidential and should not be divulged.
  • Accuracy & completeness - interpreters should not omit or add anything.
  • Impartiality - Interpreters must be unbiased and impartial
  • Conflict of Interest - Disclose any real or perceived conflict.
  • Disqualifications & Impediments - Convey any concerns regarding ability or conditions to complete an assignment
  • Accreditation - interpreters should seek accreditation in their field of work, and truly state their qualifications
  • Professionalism - maintain professional demeanor and high standards of conduct at all times.
  • Professional development - continually improve skills and knowledge through professioanl training, education and interaction with colleagues and specialists in the field of work
